parthenopi is an emerging artist that has trained and worked as a florist for the past decade and specialises in creating large sculptural floral installations for events. She relishes experimenting with bold and clashing colours and injecting a sense of humour into her work while at the same time conveying a serious environmental message. She has been inspired by our architectural and unique Australian native flora and its plight against plastic.
parthenopi’s upcycled sculpture, “emblem” is inspired by Queensland’s state flower, the Cooktown Orchid. As a florist, she is captivated by the beauty of Australian native orchids. She wanted to create them out of plastic to juxtapose that beauty with the ugliness of plastic rubbish and make viewers question what they are doing to help protect this vulnerable emblem that we prize so highly. At first greeted by these vibrant flowers, the audience might then stop and ask themselves; “how much plastic have I used lately and where has it ended up?”
